Dubrovnik has its own story
„The Pearl of the Adriatic“ is an unique old city, surrounded by its magnificent stone walls placed on UNESCO’s list of world heritage sights since 1979. With its rich cultural world-famous Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments, Dubrovnik has become one of most popular tourist destinations in Europe. The Rector’s Palace, the Sponza Palace, the Church of St. Blaise, and the Dubrovnik Cathedral, which existence makes the main difference between the title City or Town, are just a few of many interesting places.
Originally, Dubrovnik was called Ragusa, founded in the 7th. Century on cliffs below an oak forest hill. For centuries, it was home to the Republic of Ragusa, a small but powerful maritime city-state well known for its diplomatic skills as a key role in the survival and development for more than four and a half centuries.
The most significant image of Dubrovnik, City Walls were built between 12th and 17th century all around the Old Town as a protection of unwelcome guests. This almost 2km long medieval fortification is the highlight of any Dubrovnik visit. Try not to rush and enjoy the view on The Old Port, the main street Stradun, red roofs or fortresses as a main symbol of freedom…
Walking around the Old Town in summer, you will probably notice the flags Libertas, that’s the most representative cultural manifestation in Croatia, held and lasts for more than 70 years.
But, if you decide to come in February, St. Blaise’s flags will flutter around as we celebrate than our protector.
Medieval Ragusa had its own health service, pharmacy, hospital, quarantine stations, orphanage and water supply. It was known as the first country to recognize the independence of the United States of America and one of the first governments in the world to abolish slavery.
Nowadays, Dubrovnik is hosting some exciting big-name blockbusters recently filmed in and around the Old Town. For instance, Dubrovnik is the main filming location in Croatia for King’s Landing in The Game of Thrones series, but it has been also turned into Nottingham for Leonardo DiCaprio’s Robin Hood and transformed into Canto Bight, the casino planet in The Last Jedi, Star Wars saga. Explore Dubrovnik on your own by enjoying old town’s numerous restaurants, café bars, souvenir shops and art galleries or with knowledgeable local guide!
